I'm new to coyote hunting and I went out tonight at 8:00 to let out a few howls hoping for a response. Nothing answered. Is there a, "best time" to howl? I'm trying to locate some coyotes.

Do you usually hear them howling near your area? Or are you just trying to find some random 'yotes?

I've never seen a yote around here, but many others have and shot them during deer season. Guy's aren't really out hunting them but they're around. I was just out looking to locate where they frequent and figured using a howler could stir up some random coyotes. Am I correct in this thinking? If I don't get any answers in a few nights should I consider the area yote free, and move on to greener pastures? All help on this is welcomed. MOZ

I don't believe in coyote free areas,as they have a habit of being nomadic and showing up at random times. The thing I've noticed in Pa. is that the dogs seem to concentrate on areas that hold a lot of black bears as well.I hear them howling after dark in areas that usually have many gut piles from deer as well as thick swamps nearby.Try to make a connection between hard hunted deer spots and spruce swamps and you will find them.As far as locating them elsewhere, you could always go with screamin' rabbit calls. If we are lucky David Millsaps(yotey)will stop by here and be able to shed more light on this for you.He is the master!

You would be correct in the use of a howler to locate yotes in your area. Especially effective at night...A rabbit squaller is not going to really draw a response from a dog, other than possibly calling him in......

I agree howlers can work good for locating coyotes ! The best way that works for me is to go out just before dark about the same time as if you were going to put birds to bed coyotes seem to be most social at this time and shortly after dark ! Doing this in differant areas can give you a good idea of whats in the area for that nite. This can also give you a good idea of Den areas after a few times out. Hope this helps ! Good Luck ................

The best time to hear coyotes howling is early in the morning and at dusk. If you want to locate some try you howling at these times. You may also get a howling response by using your distress call at these times.

Good Luck

What I have also found is that not all yotes will howl back to a howl. I find it more of an attention getter that some yotes tend to come in silent and the Little rascal or the Dog duster series would take over the bring him closer part...

Get a siren. They are pretty cheap on ebay and work great! If you hit it for a few seconds and there is a coyote within 2 or 3 miles they will howl. Then you can use your howling or distress calls to bring them in.

i know guys that use sirens and have great results during fall. around here the 700pm fire whistle blows as well as noon. them times may be added to your get out times if the same where your from. ...Dave...
