i will be taking my daughter with me for the first time turkey hunting. she has been with me a couple of times while deer hunting. she is ready to start going to the woods with dad and hunt. she will be starting a hunter safety course in the next month so she can legally use a gun. i have been told by others that i should take her and let her shoot some with something small like a 22 cal. before letting her use the youth model 12ga i have for her does anyone out there have any advice for me that i can use also? if so i have open ears let me hear from you

To be honest with you I would recommend starting her on a 20 gauge instead of a 12. The recoil on the 12 could shy her from wanting to hunt and have her so scared to shoot it that she would possibly miss. Definetly teach her the basics on a smaller firearm and then move your up to what she will be hunting with. Even start her practicing with some lighter dove loads before you step up to the turkey loads...

yea i thought i would take her squirell hunting and let her use some light loads for that. i can't seem to find a youth model 20 so i thought we would start off with this 12 and light loads perhaps 7 or 71/2

Mossberg, remington and winchester make great affordable pump youth 20 gauges...Ranging from about 200- 250 dollars.

Check out my thread "Update on the Kids."

The 20 GA bolt gun I got for Angus is ideal for this sort of situation. He's 8, and he's tried a 12 GA, but it was too much for him. When he's ready to move to a 12 in a couple of years, I'll probably adopt it as a squirrel gun, and permanently retire Granddad's 1897 Winnie.

Unless you've got a bunch of kids waiting in line for it, a new youth shotgun may sit idle for years. On the other hand, I'll have less than $125 invested in it, before opening day. What's more, a bolt action is an extremely safe gun for a kid to understand and operate.

I got his off Gunbroker.com, but I always see these at the gun shop, often going for less than $100. I tricked out Angus' with swivels and a sling.

I'm actually thinking about acquiring one for myself, with the idea of taking a 12 GA 3" bolt and putting a choke tube system on it.

If you want a cheap gun I would go with a 20 ga New England single shot ranged $60-$100. They are great guns I have a 20, 12, and 10 ga New England.
