I have never blown a duck call and never laid a hand on one. What call would be best for me to start on first? Single or Double Reed?

If you are planning on hunting the Tri-County area with me, I would suggest picking up a Wood Duck call(QB Woody Wood Duck) and a Teal whistle. There isn't much in the way of "Quacking", down this way. If you would like to go with a Mallard call though, just to learn something new, and expand your horizon, I would suggest a single reed call to start with. The Suzie Q, and Quackmaster would be my pick. This is just my opinion, I'll bet the other 'fowlers will chim in soon, to help out..
I have all of the QB calls, and would be glad to let you check them out. If you ever get your bow put together so we can shoot, I'll bring them with me;):D

If you get the woody call dont take it apart. Took me forever to get it to sound right again...

LOL! Can't offer much advice on this as I am still learning myself, but I know that there are some guys on here that are more than willing to help! I have not forgotten about my calling lesson Yotey....just been real busy lately
You got to be kidding Right? Well Ill bite to save typing a response again. That is a Great Northern Shoveler a.k.a as a Spoony, and its a Hen or as some duck hunters call them Suzies. Not the greatest to eat.

I would have to say a double reed by any call manufacturer. They take alot less air to achieve realistic sound. Are you hunting open water or timber??
Although the wood duck whistle is realistic, conduct some research on the net and you can find their calls on digital recordings. The classic weeeeeee weeeeeee weeeeeeee sound you hear is a drake woody in flight and is not a call they produce when sitting on the water. The sound made while resting on the water is more of a single note squeal. Hen's emit a "ooeek ooeek" sound. Overall woody's are not nearly as suceptible to a call as many of the other ducks common to Florida, such as ring necks, florida mallards, widgeon and teal.
Drake teal emit a peep peeep peeeeep sound while in flight but the hens will quack very similar to a mallard hen as well. Again using the quack to work them in over decoys on open water is very effective.

Tim,
Have you been seeing many birds in the water behind your Dad's house lately? The guns have not stopped rolling out here on Lake Okahumpka. The timber stuff that I favor, is not yet prime, so to the lakes it has been. Second phase opens the second week of Dec. and I can't wait!

I have not been out on the water in 2 weeks....You need a airboat or go-devil/mud buddy to get back into those finger canals that open up into that 1-2 ft. swamp marsh back there..its probably loaded w/ some kind of ducks. The finger canals are still shallow (2-3 ft.) I'm on the look-out for a used 1642 jon boat and a used 23hp go-devil/mud buddy myself---I really enjoyed having that rig and miss hunting from the river.

Would we be able to get there in the "S.S Grinder"(Paddleboat?? How far away is the shallow stuff?

I've been wanting a mud motor bad as well as several people I know. Id like to put one on a wide 12 ft jon boat so I can putt down the river a little farther.
Im to broke to buy one straight up cash. The only other alternative is to build one, but I haven't found any detailed plans anwhere. I could build the frame no problem. The only thing im not confident on is the shaft. I may give it a go in a month or two after the car is paid off. Ill have some tinkering money then.
If you have one by then Tim you'll have to let me examine it. If not maybe ill have my $h!t together and can build one for you on the cheap.

Quack Attack sounds like the way to bust'em outta the sky..I'm going to get a double reed...got a RNT call from someone at work...its a single reed...might give duck hunting a fair shake this winter..

For a great beginner call, you might wanna look @ Foiles "strait suzy" in Hedge (wood). It's real eazy to blow and has decent range for under 40 bills. I have several calls that I paid a lot more for...but the suzy still sits on my lanyard. Double reeds require a little more air, but less of your voice is needed to make it sound good. RNT makes some good calls too, but for the $, I'd go w/ the suzy. JMO
