How many of you hunt turkeys with shotguns capable of shooting a 3 1/2 in shell, but only use shells that are 3in or less? Who uses the full 3.5 in capability sometimes, or all of the time?

3.5 inch nitro ammo triplex loads almost exclusively unless I know the situation is very tight, under 20 yards and then I switch to dove loads with number 7's.

I use 3 1/2 #5's. However I still never use more that 3 inch when waterfowling, even for swans and geese.

Got three boxes of Remington Wingmaster HD 3.5in #6's ready for the range this week! I'm hoping they like my new 870 Supermag, and ride in the vest this season:D

I sold my 3.5" 870 last year due to the guns weight and the bruised jaw everytime I shot the damn thing.
Going with a 20 gauge now....:D

3" 5's exclusively for me. Do yourself a a little test....Get some old phone books and shoot each one with a different load....This will give you an indication on how each load performs as far as penetration. I have always thought that it might be too much to ask for that load to push that extra shot, but its all up to the individual. Callem in close and it won't matter!! Good luck this spring!

Count me in as one that has never contemplated a 3.5" shell.

The main reason I like them is that many, many people have the same feelings as you guys, and that means a mountain of red tagged shells for me at $3-$5 per box come June ;)

I have been shooting the 3.5 Winchester Xtended Range #5 & #6 for the past 3 years out of my mosberg 835 w/ a Kicks choke.
I like having the extra backbone for longer shots & shooting thru cover...The gobbler I shot this spring was coming in on a string perfect and then got cold feet and wandered out to my right...I had to shoot 37 yards thru some nasty brush and I still dropped him like it was hot.
The Winchester Xtended Range are pricey @ $40 per box of ten, but all the time and effort I put into turkey season, I want to make sure when the time comes I know that the gun/ammo/choke will get the job done.
