What do you consider to be the start of hunting season?

Some people say it starts in early Fall, and ends in Spring. Some say it starts with Gobbler Season, and ends late Winter. What's your take?

Anything but spring turkey season is merely a "warm up".

Could not have said it any better

For me, hunting season begins with the spring turkey season. Once it's over then the work of making summer plots leading into fall plots and fall deer and turkey.

Mind you i am new as hunting would go (i the same area of (Quaker boys ).
i may be wrong but my personal opinion is hunting season is a year long event. with scouting ,practice , preparation, more scouting , hunt, start all over again.

but also as previously stated deer hunting is a warm up for better hunts.

i am interested in several of QB calls. i already have the Bleat IN Heat, and had some very unusual
song come back with response to it , and honestly even seen a squirrel lay down for a while after its use.

I don't know if you are familiar with the "Endless Summer" movies but that is how Hunting is for me. I hunt coyotes year round, Turkeys in the Spring and Fall, Bear in the late Summer (Have not got one, last summer was my first attempt), White Tailed Deer in the Fall, Duck and other Migratory Birds in the Fall, Rabbits and Bobcats in the Winter, than back into full out Coyote Hunting (Coyote Hunting Never Ends For Me...I am so addicted!!!)! We have 7 months of 24 hours a day Coyote Hunting here in Maine and the remainder of the year is day hunting but there is no closed season.
White Tailed Deer is my number one Passion but Coyotes are a close second, something about calling in a predator that gives you an adrenaline rush second to placing a perfect shot on a Whited Tailed Deer!
I am pretty bummed, had my chance at joining the Big Bucks Club up here in Maine on Saturday but my Dad's back was hurting so I gave him the hot spot and I walked in for the stand that was for a deer to use as a secondary option...Feel bad because out came a Monster 200+ pound Monster and I was borrowing my Dad's Muzzle Loader and he was using a friend's, and the gun didn't fire when he pulled the trigger! The Primer wasn't even dented! We were both bummed...The circumstances will haunt me until next year! I guess that is the true excitement of Deer Hunting....You Never know when the big boy is going to be standing right in front of you..and the events to follow!

Tyson, are you going to give Spring Gobblers the hard charge this year? How many days do you plan to hunt?

Hey Chad, I plan on hunting until both of my tags are full with Big Spring Gobblers, going to let the small boys walk, have been doing a lot of scouting lately and we are going to be planting a few food plots on our top fields for the deer. I will be hitting the Turkeys hard, we have a season that goes from May to June, I believe one day shy of a month. Like I told you before open invite to you. After Christmas and other Chaotic spending I will be ordering those Turkey Calls and can't wait to put them to good use. I will probably practice for a few months on those calls before getting the Turkeys going a few weeks before opening day! Should be a lot of fun...Can't wait!
How about you? How many states are you going to be covering this Spring?
To answer you question fully, I will hunt every day except Sundays which Maine does not allow just like I do now except that time of the year will be focused on Big Toms!

As it stands right now Tyson, It will be Florida, followed by Pa,NY,NJ, and today South Carolina was brought up by a friend who has a lease there. Georgia is close, and has been kicked around, but the insane licence fees there turn me off at just the thought of paying that much for a nonresident. Florida is pretty steep, if you are a non resident, but the way Ga. does it is a little whack, to me.

Thanks. It's still a long way off, and subject to change(as anything in life), but you either fail to plan, or plan to fail. Dig? The groundwork is laid, now I just have to relax, and enjoy the days leading up to it!

Paul,

The way that they have the Nonresident anual hunting/fishing licence for $100 would be O.K. to me, that is about standard for most places. It's the part where they charge $195 for a "Big Game Licence" on top of that $100, that is lame to me. Florida is just as bad with their NonRes Turkey tag, and MGT Area Stamp requirements.

I know you have to pay if you want to play, but dang. I wish a Fl Licence was good in Ga, and vice/versa.:)

But you get to bust 3 gobblers in GA, all in one day if your lucky....It does not get any better than hunting Easterns in GA

I thought about this. My inlaws have a lease there, that I could go to. My situation is a little bit different than many folks though, and this has factored into my way of thinking. When I break it down, I can hunt Pa.,NJ, and NY all for around the same price as Georgia. The gas there and back for a two week trip, is the same as to and from Ga. over many weekends. My savings come in the form of staying with relatives, and friends, and sharing meals with them at their houses. If I fly up, it gets even cheaper, but the amount of gear I take is more limited. The best part of the whole deal is getting to see some of the most beautiful country, in the Spring, as well as have the chance to kill 6 gobblers total, between three states. NJ is only a ten minute drive from the house I use as home base in Pa, and NY is only an hour away.

I may give Ga a shot however, just because I love being out there going after birds in unfamiliar turf.

You guys sure are passionate about turkey hunting. I just can't fathem spending all that hard earned cash on em'. Now if I was Bill Gates and not making 20 to 30 g a year it would be a different story. Id have my own property in several states. Until I hit the lottery or develope the next microsoft im sticking to the closest public land I can find. All the gas, amunition, permits, hunting licenses, and non residents fees starts adding up quick. Those turkeys start getting pretty expensive by the pound. Its really the hunt that cants though.

That's just my 2 cents on it being the average joe that you know. Im not knocking anybody. I know a lot of you got friends and family in other states and some of you may have the money for it. I know where id be if I did.

Sure ill swap you 5 bucks if you fly me to vermont and let me hunt on your property. J/K. I really don't have anything to swap. I don't have any private property to hunt and im broke as a joke. Im not much of a turkey hunter and I don't think anyones gonna let me run them around public woods all day chasing pigs. Im young though man, only 24. Just getting my feet wet. Once get I situated in life im sure ill have more assets and money. At least I hope...

Walt,

Thank you very much for the Christmas card to my family. That was super thoughtful. That's more effort than a lot of deadbeats I know would put forth:)
